Planning Questions We Get Asked

How do you plan your trips? How far in advance do you plan? How did you get that site? These are questions we get asked often. We use RV Life Trip Wizard and have used it for over three years now. We didn’t use it when we first started our RV life journey. However, when we did start using it, we found it to be a game changer. We plan our trips one year or more out. For example, right now in 2023, I’m playing with 2024 trip options. I have 2023 booked for the first six months. That is how we do it.

How We Plan Trips

We are planners. I share how I plot our trips in the video. First, I begin by plotting places that we want to visit, which is usually visiting family. Although, this could be a National Park or other interesting site on our “must see” list. This gives us an outline. Then, using our routing radius that we set up in RV Life Trip Wizard, we begin looking at camping options along the route. As we look at these different options, we can check amenities, campground reviews, prices, and connectivity. I don’t book at this time, but I do enter the number of days we would like to be at that location. Next, I move on to find the next campground along the route.

How We Book Sites

After we are happy with our route, I begin booking. I focus on booking touristy places and holidays first. Usually, if it’s a private campground and only one to three days, I’ll wait. Also, I check to see how many sites are available at campgrounds. If there are only three sites left when I check, for example, I go ahead and book. We usually book three to six months ahead of time. Of course, if it’s a place that we definitely want to go, I’ll go ahead and book early to ensure we have a campsite. Now, if you are wondering what happens if we have an emergency, we have flexibility built in to our schedule so that we can adjust. We know many campers like more of a wing it approach. Find and follow your own travel style.
